A new leader has taken the helm at a long-established public speaking club.

Carol Goodbody has been elected president of Dereham Articulate Speakers Club, now in its 38th year.

The club, which began at the Crane Fruehauf trailer manufacturer in Dereham, is part of Toastmasters International — a global network of more than 13,000 clubs and 260,000 members focused on improving communication and leadership skills.

Ms Goodbody said: “You can always be assured of the very best help, support and guidance from me and the other members of this club to achieve your speaking aspirations.

“It has helped me in so many ways over the years. I am pleased and honoured to continue to provide the great opportunities we offer.”

Ms Goodbody’s connection to the club is deeply personal. Her late father, Edward (Ted) Booty, was a founding member in 1988 and a long-time supporter and club officer.

The club still awards ‘Ted’s Ribbon’ at each meeting for outstanding contributions — and Ms Goodbody was the most recent recipient.

The club welcomes guests without obligation and provides a supportive space to practise speeches for any occasion, whether professional or personal.

Members also have the opportunity to compete in the Toastmasters World Championships of Public Speaking through annual contests.

Dereham Articulate Speakers meets fortnightly on Mondays at Meeting Point on St Withburga Lane in Dereham. Meetings begin at 7.30pm, with arrivals from 7.15pm.

The next three meetings are on September 1, 15 and 29.

The club’s mission, in line with Toastmasters International, is to empower individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders.
