New nursing apprenticeships where people can 'earn as they learn' are to be opened in Norfolk and Suffolk.

Providers of NHS services in the two counties will be able to apply for a share of more than £65m of government cash to offer the apprenticeships.

In 2024/25, 108 nursing degree apprentices were recruited across Norfolk and Suffolk and the money will enable more to be created.

Nurse degree apprentices earn a salary while they train, which health chiefs hope will help break down barriers to a career in nursing and enable people to qualify closer to home.

Karin Smyth, health minister, said: "Nurses are the backbone of the NHS, supporting us both physically and emotionally through our most vulnerable moments.

"But becoming a nurse shouldn’t be determined by where you live. That’s why we are committed to growing the nursing workforce, especially in the areas of the country with greatest need.

"We’re unlocking an extra 2,000 additional nursing degree apprenticeships across the country in the areas that need them the most, including Suffolk and Norfolk."

Applications for funding will open later this year.
