Drivers will face further disruption this weekend, when parts of the A47 are closed when the last in a series of abnormal loads makes its way slowly across Norfolk.

The police-escorted convoy on Sunday (June 28), will be the final time wind farm transporters have had to travel from King's Lynn to near Norwich.

The transformers are being carried from the port at King's Lynn to energy company Ørsted's converter station at Swardeston, off the A47 southern bypass near Norwich.

The transformers will be used to convert the power generated by the Danish company's planned Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm off the Norfolk coast, so it can feed into the National Grid.

There have been seven previous convoys on various Sundays since January.

As on previous occasions, this Sunday's convoy, with a maximum speed of 12mph, will set off from the port at King's Lynn at 6am.

The 272-tonne load will travel through King's Lynn on Crossbank Road, the A1078, Grimston Road, Queen Elizabeth Way and Constitution Hill before joining the A47 and crossing the county.

The vehicle will then turn off at the A140 junction, heading towards the city to the junction with the B1113, near Tesco. They will then head south along that road to the converter station at Swardeston.

The convoy will mean road closures on the A47 close to Thickthorn roundabout.

The closures are needed because traffic management arrangements in place for National Highways' £200m scheme to revamp the Thickthorn junction will need to be removed so the transformer trailers can get through - and then put back in place afterwards.

The A47 eastbound slip road near Norwich, where the A11 Newmarket Road connects to the southern bypass, will be shut from 8pm on Saturday (June 27) until 6am on Monday (June 29).

And the A47 eastbound, between Watton Road and Ipswich Road, will be shut from 8pm on Sunday (June 28) until 6am on Monday (June 29).

During the closures, traffic will be diverted via Dereham Road, Norwich's ring road and Ipswich Road.

Bosses at Ørsted say Hornsea 3 will deliver 2.9 GW of clean energy into the UK National Grid - enough to power more than three million homes.
