Extra police patrols will be carried out in Dereham after a woman was raped earlier this month.

The attack happened near Sandy Lane between 11pm and 11.19pm on Saturday, July 4.

A police cordon was in place at a park by Old Becclesgate while officers investigated the scene.

In a post on Facebook, Alison Webb, Norfolk County councillor for Dereham North and Scarning, confirmed that police have agreed to step up patrols in response to concerns from those living nearby.

Cllr Webb added: "I have received many messages from residents who are very concerned regarding their or their families safety.

"I have raised this issue at Breckland Council and the council officers have contacted the police.

"They have expressed the concerns and the police have agreed to carry out additional patrols to reassure residents".

Following the incident, a man in his 30s was later arrested on suspicion of rape and taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

He has been bailed and is due to return to the police investigation centre on September 8.
