Highways bosses have explained why one of the biggest changes due to a multi-million-pound A47 dualling scheme has to happen - and why the road will need to close.

As part of National Highways' work to dual the A47 between Easton and North Tuddenham, Easton roundabout is being removed - and afterwards traffic will use another new stretch of dualled carriageway.

Officials said taking out that roundabout - and creating new junctions elsewhere along the A47 - will improve safety and reduce congestion.

The work will mean the A47 has to be closed in both directions between the Wood Lane junction and Longwater interchange, from 8pm on Friday, July 31 until 6am on Monday, August 3.

There will also be no side road access on to the A47 from 7.30pm on July 31, but the B1535 Wood Lane to the A1067 will remain open.

National Highways officials said they aim to complete 90pc of the work before the closure.

But they say shutting the road - in both directions - is necessary for them to excavate and construct the new dualled section of road which will replace the roundabout and which drivers will be moved on to once it is gone.

Chris Griffin, programme manager at National Highways, said: “The A47 North Tuddenham to Easton dualling scheme will reduce congestion, improve reliability, open up the economy across Norfolk and most importantly improve safety.

"While most of the work has so far been completed away from the existing carriageway, to enable us to build the Easton junction we do have to access that carriageway at times.

"We recognise the impact this has on the travelling public and keep these closures to an absolute minimum.

“We are making great progress with lots still to do and are on target for completion in summer 2027.”

A diversion will be in place throughout the weekend and people living on the stretch of road will be escorted by traffic marshals when needed.

Once the roundabout is gone, access from where Easton roundabout currently is to the A47 Dereham Road and Church Lane in Easton will be permanently closed.

The scheme will see two new junctions - one at Berry’s Lane and Wood Lane, and the second at Blind Lane and Norwich Road.

The work comes at a time when a major Christian festival - Newday 2006 - concludes at the Norfolk Showground.

The event runs from Monday, July 27 with those attending due to leave the site on Saturday, August 1.

National Highways said it had consulted and planned out full road closure dates, well in advance, including discussions with "local partners" and said they tried to minimise disruption as much as possible.
