Work to demolish a Norfolk town skate park and replace it with a new facility is under way.

The park, at Dereham Recreation Ground, was installed within the area more than 20 years ago.

It was described by the town council as "coming to the end of its useful life", with concrete wearing away on the ramps.

The revamp was due to begin earlier this year, but was pushed back after delays on other projects in the area.

A digger is now on the park, with the demolition and construction phase expected to last between 12 and 14 weeks.

A public event was held in January to engage with the community on the initial designs and what would encourage people to use the facility more.

Following the engagement, the design of the park was revised and extended.

A spokesman for Dereham Town Council said: "As part of this engagement the designers not only engaged with existing users of the skate park, but also reached out to people who do not currently use the facility because they feel uncomfortable doing so or are unable to do so through disability.

"We would like to thank all those who engaged with the designers back in January, your input has genuinely helped to bring forward a much better facility.

"While it was never going to be possible to include all the features everybody would like, the designers have tried to include features for experienced confident skaters, less confident skaters, along with BMX and people with disabilities".

Wheelscape, a design and construction company, was commissioned to refurbish the facility.

Some of the features at the new park include ledges, flatbanks, quarter pipes, roll-ins, and level changes among others.

The total cost of the project will be £279,000 with £25,000 being provided by Breckland Council’s Pride funding.
