A new egg production unit holding more than 38,000 chickens could be built on a poultry farm.

Plans were lodged by Sporle Farms for the development at Great Palgrave Farm in Sporle near Dereham.

This would involve the demolition of the existing turkey breeder unit buildings - which hold a flock of 2,650 hens and 280 stags.

These were described as "nearing the end of their operational life" and "no longer fit for purpose for modern poultry production".

A new broiler breeder fertile egg production unit would be built on the site - comprising of three linked poultry houses and associated infrastructure.

These would accommodate a total of 38,100 birds - which is more than 14 times the amount of the previous unit buildings.

It will operate on a 48-week production cycle with a four-week flock change-over period between successive cycles.

The site would be run by four full time members of staff, who will manage the flock, operate the egg packing facility and maintain the buildings and equipment.

A design, access and planning statement said the development would replace an "existing, redundant turkey breeder unit" with a "modern, purpose-built facility designed to current standards".

The statement added that the facility will allow Sporle Farms to "maintain and expand its productive capacity, adapt to changing market conditions, and remain economically competitive in the UK poultry sector".

Breckland Council will make a decision on the plans at a later date (Image: Newsquest)

It continued: "The buildings are well designed in terms of their form, scale, and external appearance.

"The use of olive green profiled steel cladding ensures that the development integrates into the surrounding agricultural landscape and is consistent with the character of the rural area".

Breckland Council is due to make a decision on the application at a later date.
