These bird's-eye view photographs show the rate of progress to dual a key part of the A47 in Norfolk, as highways chiefs say the opening of another section is just months away.

Bosses carrying out the £200m-plus work to dual five-and-a-half miles of the A47 between Easton and North Tuddenham, say that, by the end of the year, motorists will be using 50pc of the new road.

Drivers are already using some sections of the new road, including where Easton roundabout used to be - as shown in the picture by aerial photographer Mike Page.

And Chris Griffin, programme manager at National Highways, the government agency responsible for the work, which is being done by contractors Galliford Try, said drivers will be using even more of the new road before the year is out.

He said: "There has been a lot of progress.

We have have a good summer, in that the hot weather enabled us to get on with the construction and we completed the section at Easton.

The next major stage will be opening the road from the western end to Wood Lane later this year.

That will mean motorists will be driving on half of the scheme and we are still on track for full opening in 2027."

Next week will see a one-lane closure and temporary traffic lights when a new junction and access road takes shape between the Honingham roundabout and Wood Lane junction.

On Thursday (September 17), Friday (September 18) and Saturday (September 19) one lane on the A47 will be shut from 8pm until 6am.

Temporary traffic lights will also be in place to allow traffic to flow in both directions, so National Highways officials warned there may be some short delays.

National Highways is also putting the finishing touches to dualling between Blofield and North Burlingham and is continuing work on the revamp of Thickthorn roundabout, where the A47 and A11 meet on the edge of Norwich.

That project will re-route traffic away from the roundabout through new underpasses beneath the A47 and A11.

As part of that work, the A11 will be shut between the A47 Thickthorn junction and Wymondham from 8pm on Friday, September 18, until 6am on Monday, September 21.

That is so beams for a new bridge - to carry the future Cantley Lane Link Road - can be lifted into place.
