A road repair company has settled 20 claims after a lorry spill left dozens of cars coated in a sticky, tar-like substance.

The incident happened last month in the Billingford and Dereham areas, where a lorry operated by Velocity UK Ltd, a specialist road repair firm, leaked a "water-based bitumen emulsion" on to the road.

The company apologised after the incident and has been working with affected drivers to resolve the issue.

Peter Rivett, 74, who was travelling in North Elmham toward Dereham at around 10am, was one of the drivers affected.

"I was driving down the road and then the next minute it was a blackout and my screen was covered in sticky tar," he said.

"I then drove to a car wash in Dereham and several other cars pulled up to the car wash also coated in the tar."

He said the substance could not be washed off easily and has had to turn to his insurance provider and a local garage for help repairing the damage.

A spokesman for Velocity UK Ltd said its immediate priority was to work with those affected to resolve the situation as quickly as possible, including putting appropriate arrangements in place for vehicles requiring cleaning or further attention.

The company has contacted affected motorists directly, assessed individual cases and covered reasonable costs incurred as a result of the spill.

Dominic Gardner, a spokesman for Velocity, said it dealt with 20 claims and has had some good feedback from customers.

Velocity has also deployed teams to inspect and clean affected roads, verges and vegetation.

Mr Rivett said he was frustrated that it had taken the company a month to reimburse his insurance costs for the damage.
