Today The Times is claiming a victory for Dereham after it was announced the problematic pot-holes at the Cherry Tree car park will be repaired next week.

Breckland Council said today that the main entrance to the town's biggest car park will be closed next Wednesday as the owner's of the land have called in a contractor to fix the 16 deep holes.

The news comes after The Times has continually demanded for car park the saga to end and for our community's cars to stop being damaged.

Breckland Council said today that the main entrance to the town's biggest car park will be closed next Wednesday as the owners of the land have called in a contractor to fix the 16 deep holes.

The news comes after demands have been made across the town for the car park saga to end and for the community's cars to stop being damaged.

And it emerged yesterday that the delays to work on the car park were because Breckland Council did not realise the land's Chinese owner could not understand its letters asking him to fix them.

Most of the car park is owned by Breckland Council, but the strip of land across the entrance belongs to the owner of the Cherry Tree pub.

Breckland Council leader William Nunn revealed that the council had only recently realised the owner lives in China, does not speak English and could not understand the letters the council had sent him.

The council is now using a Chinese interpreter, and Mr Nunn said he did not blame staff for the delay.

He said: 'The fact that we did not realise the owner was Chinese and that he could not read the letters and was not bothering to translate – I can understand that. If I got a letter in Chinese I probably would think it was a joke and not do anything about it.'

He added: 'We are in dialogue with the owner. We have written to them many times but we have only recently found out they are not British and do not speak English. We are now working with interpreters.

'They have said they have quotes to do the work and we are hoping by the middle of this week to hear when that work will be carried out.'

Roger Atterwill, chairman of Swanton Morley Parish Council who carried out his own temporary repairs last September, described his reaction as 'just disbelief, really. You could not make it up'.

He said: 'I think it's ridiculous that it's gone on for so long and it's still not resolved. I will believe it when I see it, that sufficient repairs have been carried out.'

The other entrance to the car park, off Theatre Street adjacent to Theatre Street Surgery, will remain open for the work which is expected to be completed in a day.
