Neighbours and community-spirited youngsters rolled up their sleeves and gave up their free time for a mass litter pick in Toftwood.

Residents cleared rubbish from the recreational ground and around Charles Close before planting a selection of spring bulbs in their front gardens in the event supported by Breckland Council's Pride in Breckland initiative, Broadland Housing, Peddars Way Housing and Dereham Safer Neighbourhood Team.

In just one day their hard work amassed more than 12 bags of rubbish, two sofas, a TV set, three mattresses, one microwave and two fridge-freezers which were taken away by the council's environmental services team who were on hand to advise residents on reducing their waste and recycling more.

Councillor Theresa Hewett, executive member for communities, paid tribute to all the volunteers and said the aim was not only to clean up public spaces but also to give young people the chance to demonstrate that they can make a really positive impact on the appearance of the local area and dispel any negative stereotypes.

Richard Wills, Pride in Breckland co-ordinator, said; 'Community spirit was certainly in evidence throughout the day and people of all ages came forward to help. The young people of Charles Close, in particular, did a great job and showed loads of Pride in their community.'

Volunteers were rewarded for their efforts with a free goody bag and certificate of achievement.
