Show-stopping youngsters recalled the decade of bad taste and great music on Saturday to promote the forthcoming run of their 1980s-themed musical.

A 42-strong cast from Dereham Operatic Society's Youth Theatre Company are gearing up to perform in Back to the 80s - a nostalgic show set in the graduating year of an American high school.

The seven to 19 year olds have put in hours of rehearsal since November to perfect the 24 song and dance routines based on classic tunes from the era including Material Girl, Footloose and Kids in America.

But about 20 of the team took a break to put on impromptu performances and hand out flyers at Nelson Place in Dereham to promote the show.

The theatre company's Jeannie Woods said the bright sing-a-long tale of teenage tribulations would also strike a chord with anyone who remembered the decade of Rubic's Cubes and bubble skirts.

"It is very funny - the children will enjoy the dancing but their parents will pick up on the jokes."

Claire Doughty, 19, is playing a character named after 80s chart-topper Tiffany.

She said: "The show is somewhere between Grease and High School Musical so there is a lot that people can relate to." The show runs from Wednesday to next Saturday at Dereham Memorial Hall. Tickets are available at Just Kitchenware on Dereham's High Street, call 01362 699899.
