A Norfolk village will get outdoor gym equipment and a youth football club can buy some moveable goals thanks to a couple of new grants from Breckland Council.

Brisley Parish Council will receive a £3,119 match funding grant and an extra £1,725 from the district council's sport and play budget to pay for an arm-and-pedal bike and an air walker.

This equipment for older children and adults will complement the village's existing play area for youngsters.

And Dereham Town Youth Football Club made a successful match-funding bid for £1,131 for the moveable goals, which will let the club take on more young players.

Edward Coe, Brisley Parish Council chairman, said he was delighted with the grant. He said: 'We were keen to provide equipment to cater for the needs of the whole community, regardless of age.

'When the new equipment is installed parents can exercise while their children play, and less mobile residents can take advantage of the air walker which puts less strain on joints.'

Gordon Bambridge and Bill Borrett, Breckland councillors for Upper Wensum ward, which includes Brisley, said in a joint statement: 'We were delighted to support this application. Brisley has a vibrant community, and the parish council has been tireless in progressing this ambitious project over many years.'

The new equipment will complete an ambitious amenity project, which also includes a woodland, started in Brisley in 2010.

And Chris Mason, youth football club chairman, said he was thrilled more children could join the club thanks to the new goals.

Mr Mason said: 'A lot of young people are waiting to join the club but we don't have the facilities to expand.

'Dereham Town Football Club has offered us the use of their grounds, at a greatly reduced rate, but we would need to supply our own goals.

'Thanks to this grant, we can take up their offer and this will provide the additional capacity we need to recruit, train and develop more young players.'

Dereham Neatherd war councillors Alison Webb and William Richmond said: 'Encouraging children to participate in sport is important as this supports their wellbeing and develops team spirit.'
