It was a big challenge for little cars more used to taking a lovable television twosome on their comedy capers than braving the wilds of Bavaria.

And for the Reliant Robins made famous in Only Fools and Horses it was the end of the road when seven strapping bikers took them from Norfolk to Germany to raise money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Mark Vickers, Brian Hope, David Hood, Baz Taylor Hone, Chris Evans, and Phil Wharton, all from Raptor Motorcycle Club in Reepham last month left the village to go to one of the most notorious bike conventions in the world- Elephant in Bavaria.

The men, who travelled in the three-wheelers more used to carrying Del Boy, Rodney, Trigger and Granddad, have now returned from their travels.

But sadly the Reliant Robins are no more after breaking down on the journey which saw the bikers cross 844 miles in 26 hours.

Mr Wharton said: “One of the cars broke down near Maidstone, which was a good job had it carried on would have been travelling at 70mph with no brakes.

“We went on in a 4x4, while the first car with the cut off roof carried on to Germany. The rear passenger started to hallucinate after a while because of the cold so we had to instigate a rotation system.

“The next day we arrived at the festival where because of a terminal fuel problem it remains to this day.

“When we left a few days later only one person had washed and undressed. We kept dreaming about hot showers and tea.

“On the way back there was an argument over a map. I being the only smoker jumped out for a quick one and casually kicked the wheel-it wobbled. The others thought I was joking until I lifted it and the wheel fell off in my hands.

“Overall it was a fabulous experience. Thinking soberly I would never do it again, it's too cold and too far. But we all know that next year down the pub, bravado spurning forth, influenced by beer, the answer could be different.”

So far the bikers have raised about £1,600 for East Anglian Air Ambulance. To sponsor the journey call 0845 0669999.
