People are being invited to set sail down the River Wensum, in Fakenham, at a summer raft race with a difference.

The community group Active Fakenham is inviting crews of friends, family members or work colleagues to build a full-size raft using only cardboard, before setting off down a short stretch of the river near Goggs Mill.

Supported by the Wensum Ospreys Canoe Club, the event, which will run on June 2, will be part of a fun day featuring stalls, live music, the newly-revived Great Fakenham Duck Race and a corporate duck race run in partnership with Fakenham Rotary Club.

Richard Crook, of Active Fakenham, said crews, who would have to stick to exacting environmental standards, would be timed over a fixed course.

He added: “There will be a range of prizes on offer, from best fancy dress raft and crew, to first across the line.”
