A Coronation Street star is leaving Weatherfield's cobbled streets to head to Dereham this weekend.

Andy Whyment, who plays Kirk in the ITV show, will officially open the town's new Poundland store on Saturday.

The discount retailer, which opens its doors to shoppers for the first time on Thursday, has taken over the old Woolworths site in the Market Place.

The store is hosting a family fun day from 10am on Saturday with an instore DJ playing party tunes throughout the day and giving away balloons and sweets. Shoppers will also be able to take part in a check-out challenge to win Poundland vouchers.

The new store is the retailer's 222nd shop. News of its arrival in Dereham sparked a debate about the future of retail in the town as some people welcomed the store while others said they feared it could have a negative impact on shopping in Dereham.

The Coronation Street star will be at Poundland from 10am for about two hours.
