Dereham's new Poundland store was packed with a party atmosphere for its official opening complete with Coronation Street's Kirk as star guest.

Andy Whyment, who plays Kirk in the ITV soap, proved to be a hit with people queuing from 10am to noon for his autograph or have their picture taken with him in the former Woolworths store in Market Place.

He was joined by his wife Nichola and 10 month old baby boy Thomas.

Speaking of the people of Dereham the actor, who is more used to Weatherfield's cobbled streets, said: “They are really nice. It's really nice to be here.

“This is my sixth store opening for Poundland and it has been the busiest.”

The store was filled with music and balloons for the event, which saw a check-out challenge competition to win Poundland vouchers and free balloons and sweets.

The store reopened for the first time on Thursday. It is Poundland's 222nd store.
