A series of roadworks which will cause hold-ups and lead to diversions start in Dereham next week.

The High Street will be closed between 7pm and 7am on Wednesday and Thursday nights next week. Diversions will be in place.

Contractor Morrisons is doing the work and has issued a phone number of 08700 500972 for inquiries.

Meanwhile work to ensure pupils have a safer journey to the town's biggest high school will start on Monday and take about eight weeks.

A better pathway and a new cycletrack will be built from Station Road to Neatherd High School.

Traffic lights will be used between Station Road and Crown Road, while the work is done and although access to properties will be maintained at all times, it is likely there will be some disruption throughout the £92,000 scheme.

And work starts on Monday on minor footpath works in Westfield Road ahead of £130,000 of road resurfacing works due to start on August 16.

Work will cover from the junction with the A1075 South Green to the junction with Westfield Lane and will be carried out until about August 22.

During this time the road will be closed with a diversion via the A1075 Shipdham Road and School Lane from August 16 to 22.

Meanwhile, last week's jams were caused by work designed to help traffic move more freely through one of the town's busiest streets.

Norfolk County Council is ungrading light controllers at the London Road and Tavern Lane junction and Green Lane.

This means they will be able to respond to electronic messages from loops in the road.
