A taste of France was served up at Northgate High School as youngsters practised their language skills while working in a Parisian-style caf.

Dressed up as waiters complete with pencilled on moustaches, the team of year seven students from Northgate High, in Dereham, spent lunchtime on Wednesday, June 24, waiting on their teachers in a special outdoor caf where escargots, croque monsieurs and croissants were among the items on the menu.

The aim of the exercise was to take French out of the classroom and give the students practical experience of using the language.

Vincent Everett, head of languages, said: 'The pupils were putting the French they have learnt into use, making sure they used their initiative and that all the teachers were served their food. It was a real French experience for them and they did really well.

'This was the second year we have done the French caf and it was very successful.'

Charlie Sutton, 12, said: 'I was good fun and has helped me get more confident in speaking French.'

Ellen Davies, 12, said: 'It has helped us to improve our French because we are using French for real and not just in the classroom.'

Her fellow waitress Natasha Scollay, 11, added: 'Some of the teachers were very good at speaking French and some of them we had to help!'
