When Rob Scott started his cabin business he did not plan to have one display site – let alone three.

A director who expected his business to be a home-working one-man show has announced that he and his new management team will be opening a series of showrooms across the county.

Rob Scott founded Cabins Unlimited five years ago, thinking it would be an entirely online business.

But having opened a show site for his premium timber builds, it became apparent that customers wanted to be able to view the buildings more accessibly, and speak to experts from the company.

Mr Scott said: “Our footfall has been really good at our Dereham show site, and we will open a display site in North Burlingham on September 1.

“We realised people not only wanted to see the product, to sit in it and touch it, but to actually have an expert there to talk through the issues they think they might face, instead of trying to get hold of someone online.

“We are also in negotiations for a third display site in Downham Market. Our strategy is to line either side of the A47 corridor, with Dereham servicing central Norfolk, North Burlingham serving the East and Suffolk, and Downham Market to attract customers from west Norfolk, Lincolnshire and Cambridge.”

Each of the sites will cost the company around £50,000 to purchase and stock.

Mr Scott added: “We’re also working on a distribution arm of the business which will launch in the next year or so. Currently our stock is stored and delivered by a company, but we want to bring that in house and stock massive amounts of the product, and have our own lorry to deliver them to customers.”

The business based in Dereham has an annual turnover of around £1.3m.

Mr Scott said: “What is different about us is that we also have our own fitting team for our products. A lot of people think they will need to hire a contractor but we have our own team to ensure that it’s done correctly.”

He added: “I’ve also appointed a management team who are absolutely fantastic, the work should be credited to them and not me.

“A year ago we had seven employees and now we have 15 full time staff. We’ll take on about 10 to 15 more in the next 12 to 18 months as our display sites open.”
