A project to help a rural school in the Gambia has been given a boost thanks to a Dereham woman's fundraising efforts.

A target of £2,500 was raised through a psalm reading at the Cowper Road Congregational Church in July this year.

Now it means the school Janet Clark supports in the Upper River District is able to build an accommodation block for its teachers.

The school, in Bakadagd, is the equivalent of a secondary school and serves 16 villages in the area.

Mrs Clark said she had also received donations for the project, which she gives talks on.

Dereham Baptist Church also raised £150, which will fund an assistant nursery teacher for one year.

Through Mrs Clark's project people can sponsor a child's education for a year for £30.

Mrs Clark goes to the area once per year to see how they are getting on and what else they need.

In total 30 children have been sponsored by Norfolk people. For more information contact Mrs Clark on 01362 858221.
