A naturist club and holiday park is applying for permission to extend its live music and alcohol licence.

Merryhill Leisure is based at Telegraph Hill, Honingham, and run by husband and wife team Alan and Sylvia Avery along with their son Andrew.

The site includes more than 100 static holiday homes and an area for touring caravans and camping as well as indoor and outdoor swimming pools, two tennis courts and a small woodland walk.

Currently Merryhill is allowed to have live music indoors and outdoors on Monday and Friday from 8pm until midnight, Saturday from midday until 1am and Sunday from midday until midnight.

The park is asking for permission to also be allowed to have live music from 8pm until midnight on Thursday.

Mr Avery said he did not intend to have live music every Thursday and that it would probably only be during Merryhill's annual music festival.

He said: “We are a holiday park and we have eight or 12 dances a year and this saves us having to apply for a special licence for each event. The reason for having this full licence is so we can pick and choose our diary dates.”

Merryhill also has permission to serve alcohol from 11am until midnight Monday to Friday and on Sunday, and from 11am until 1am on Saturday, and it wants to extend this by an hour each day.

Mr Avery said: “We only run a bar when we have a dance. We are not like a night club.”

The Avery family have lived on the site for 26 years and have run the naturist park there for 15 years. Mr Avery said Merryhill aims to be sympathetic to the local area and is completely fenced in.

Broadland District Council's licensing sub-committee is due to discuss the application to vary Merryhill's premises licence on Monday, November 2.
