Wells Community Hospital throws open its doors next Thursday to the public to show the range of services and facilities it offers.

In the second community services showcase to be staged since the hospital re-opened in its new form, representatives of nearly 20 support and advice organisations will be there to talk to the visitors.

On February 14, between 10am and 4pm, there will be a range of services available including free, on-the-spot hearing checks, demonstrations of fire safety equipment including alarms for those with hearing and visual impairments and demonstrations in the use of acupuncture.

There will also be representation from groups that organise social activities, provide support for young families and who can arrange transport to GP surgerys and hospitals.

The hospital has released details of case studies where people found assistance at the last showcase day.

Mrs A suffered a broken leg and, after the plaster came off, found it very difficult to get around her bungalow and cope with everyday activities. At the showcase event she met the Age Concern team and was given much practical support.

Mr B had a free hearing test at the showcase event. The Audiologist explained what a huge difference a simple and unobtrusive hearing aid would make to his life and explained how he could obtain one.

Wells Community Hospital is now in its second year since re-opening after a long hard-fought campaign.

Today, following much work largely by volunteers, it is a bright and welcoming venue offering many new out-patient services.

Outpatient clinics are held on a daily basis, consultants and nurse specialists from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at King's Lynn run ultrasound, rheumatology and children's clinics. There is a physiotherapy department and independent clinics offering a range of clinics including osteoporosis scans, acupuncture, audiology and chiropody.
