Norfolk MP George Freeman does not plan to stand as Conservative leader, despite previously signalling he would if asked.

The Mid Norfolk MP told BBC Radio Norfolk on September 14 he would stand if people wanted him to.

But Mr Freeman has now tweeted: “My call last week for anyone thinking of challenging the PM this autumn to back off and let her deliver the withdrawal agreement before handing on to a New Generation leader, caused much speculation. To be clear, I do NOT plan to stand.”

He said: “We need to think more about the ‘we’ than the ‘I’, focus more on the programme than the personalities, and make an inspiring team which draws on all our talents in a cabinet and government of unity and renewal.

“If and when the PM stands aside and there is a leadership contest, we should encourage as many views and voices to be heard as possible, so the right leader emerges.”
