Jet skiers have hit back at critics who claim the sport is a nuisance saying they suffer abuse each time they go near the beach.

Last night those who regularly visit the north Norfolk coast to use jet skis said they were subject to harassment, including having cameras thrust in their face and verbal attacks.

Steven White, from Longham, said: “We love the sport and a group of us try and go three or four times a week.

“But as soon as we pitch up at the beach people shout abuse, take pictures of us, call the police and block the launch entrance by parking their cars in our way.

“When they do that they're breaking the law and we have to call the police to sort it out. We abide by the rules.

“People say it's noisy, then why allow power boats around. The coastguards were quick enough to use our jet skis to search for the man who jumped off Cromer pier.

“We just want our side of the story to be heard.”

The plea comes as fresh attempts were made to solve the long running saga about whether jet skis should be used around the county's coast.

A North Norfolk District Council working party has drawn up a proposal for five possible safe launching sites for jet skis between Sheringham and Sea Palling.

The working party will put a full report to the council cabinet in October flagging up the objections which were voiced to all five of the sites.
