A new leaflet campaign in six languages has been launched by police, shops and council officials to tackle drink-related crime and anti-social behaviour in Breckland market towns.

Flyers - with translations in Portuguese, Latvian, Lithuanian, Russian and Polish - are being handed out alerting people to consequences of being caught drinking alcohol in public in Dereham, Thetford, Watton, Attle-borough and Swaffham.

The leaflets, produced jointly by the police and Breckland Council, give customers full details of the Designated Public Place (DPP) order, which gives police and police community support officers extra powers to tackle street drinking.

People flouting the ban can be fined up to 500.

Breckland police Superintendent Katie Elliott said: "We recognise that the consumption of alcohol, partic-ularly in public places, is often linked to antisocial behaviour and crime. Breckland policing teams and partners are working on a number of initiatives to reduce such antisocial behaviour so the general public can enjoy our towns and facilities in peace.

"The DPP is one such initiative which has proved to be successful in the past in reducing alcohol-related nuisance. We also have very good Pubwatch schemes in our market towns and drinkers who go on to behave in an antisocial way or commit crime are being banned by landlords from frequenting their pubs."

Stephen Askew, executive member for communities at Breckland Council said: "The leaflets will help make all members of the community aware of the restrictions in place and will contribute to a reduction in alcohol-related incid-ents associated with drinking in public places."
