Toni Terry and Lieutenant Guy Disney, who is based at the Dragoons' Swanton Morley barracks, have appealed for 2010 horse riders to help raise the cash through a special riding event.

Each rider will be asked to raise a minimum of 500 for the Help for Heroes charity to take part.

It will see their horses ridden from Ascot racecourse to Windsor Great Park before returning to the racecourse before racing begins on July 10, 2010.

Only the first 2010 riders who apply to www.horses4heroes.co.uk can take part and the deadline for registration is December 18 this year.

Mrs Terry, an aspiring dressage rider and Lt Disney, who is also an amateur rider, were at Ascot last Wednesday to encourage riders to sign up.

Mrs Terry said: "I am working hard to achieve the highest levels of dressage and I admire hugely the dedication of the riders that I aspire to emulate, but such dedication is nothing compared to what our brave soldiers demonstrate every day in the face of extreme danger."

Lt Disney added: "I can think of few professions that encapsulate the same values of professionalism and dedication more than being a soldier and race riding, and there is a long association between racing and the armed forces, including military races under rules in which I have been lucky enough to compete.

"Working with the racing and equestrian community to raise such an ambitious sum for Help For Heroes feels like a very natural partnership.'

Lt Disney lost his right foot and lower leg in Helmand in July when the Taliban launched a RPG assault on his Spartan vehicle.

The same night he was treated at Camp Bastion and by the following day he was in the care of Selly Oak hospital staff back in Britain.

He has had nothing but praise for the treatment he has received.
