Stalwart Simon Barnes has informed Dereham Town's committee of his intentions to step down as chairman at the end of the current season.

Following the Magpies' 2-1 victory over Thetford last week, Barnes posted a message on Twitter about his intentions to resign having taken up the role on an interim basis at the beginning of the 2013/2014 season, succeeding Mike Baldry who resigned from the role due to personal reasons.

Barnes said: 'I feel that it is the right time for me and also the club to step down, which allows a new chairman to come in with new ideas and a fresh approach to start a new era in the history of this great club.

'I have been chairman of the club for seven out of the past nine years now and having been in football for 36 years of my life, I think it is time for a break. I honestly feel that this is the best club in the county and while in the chair I have always endeavoured to maintain high standards, doing things the correct way. I have always been given the full support of the committee, the fans, the management and the players and would like to thank everyone for their fantastic support over the years.

'I would also like to give a special mention to Tony Barker, of the Barconn Group, who throughout all my years as chairman here has been the club's main sponsor. Tony has always been very supportive of myself and is a very good friend.

'I will always remain a supporter of the club and will help out when asked. I feel this is a great opportunity for someone to come forward and lead a very special and highly thought of club, who have a great reputation in non-league football.'

Barnes hopes to round off his tenure by enjoying a Carrow Road visit in the Norfolk Senior Cup final after his club have made the Ryman North play-offs.
