Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly set to be sued by Manchester United for an alleged breach of contract after the forward made a number of claims and criticised the club in a recent interview.

The Premier League club have appointed lawyers, The Guardian reports, and they are seeking a swift resolution to the issue.

Ronaldo, 37, spoke to Piers Morgan in a live interview on Talk TV where he heavily criticised the club.

He made a series of allegations that the senior executives of the club lacked empathy after his newborn son died in April, that manager Erik ten Hag does not respect him and that the club are trying to force him out.

Additionally, he claimed that Manchester United's owners, the Glazer family, do not care about the club.

It is now almost certain that Ronaldo will never play for Manchester United again, and The Guardian reports that he has been told not to return to training once Portugal's run in the World Cup concludes.

On Friday a club statement said: “Manchester United has this morning initiated appropriate steps in response to Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent media interview.

"We will not be making further comment until this process reaches its conclusion."

There had already been murmurings that Ronaldo was looking to move away from the club after a lack of match starts this season.

Currently, the Portuguese international is on a £500,000 a week contract which is set to expire in the summer of 2023.

Ronaldo initially joined Manchester United in 2003, becoming a fan favourite, before leaving in 2009 to join Real Madrid.

He returned to Manchester in 2021 and was greeted ecstatically by supporters at the time.
