A familiar face has returned to Emmerdale after a long absence from the village.
PC Mike Swirling, the village’s resident police officer, appeared in the May 25 episode of the ITV soap, marking his first appearance in several months.
The character, who debuted in 2004, has featured in over 263 episodes over 22 years and frequently interacts with Emmerdale residents.
In his latest appearance, PC Swirling arrested Cain Dingle (played by Jeff Hordley) for public urination and drunk and disorderly behaviour.
Cain, who had recently undergone a radical prostatectomy for aggressive prostate cancer, decided to relieve himself at the side of the road after ignoring his brother’s advice to take it easy.
PC Swirling and a colleague arrested him, much to Cain’s frustration.
Fans took to social media to express their excitement about Swirling’s return.
One wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: "THE GOAT RETURNS! APPRECIATION POST FOR THE MAN! THE MYTH! THE LEGEND! - PC SWIRLING."
Another said: "Swirling!!! We are now safe! Never disappear again."

A third fan posted: "PC SWIRLING!!! IVE MISSED YOU. I hope you enjoyed your time off #Emmerdale."
The character’s reappearance quickly became a talking point, with viewers expressing affection for the long-standing officer.
One fan wrote: "Hello Swirling. You’ve been missed. #Emmerdale."
Another added: "At last, for the first time all year, we have a PC Swirling sighting!"

Emmerdale spoilers indicate that in upcoming scenes, Moira will confront Cain about his night in the cells and urge him to explain how he ended up there.
Cain, however, will struggle to find the words.
