A long-established Dereham firm is ending more than 40 years of having a shop in the town centre but developing its operation on the edge of the town.

The Birds clothing store in Norwich Street will be shutting and the business will be concentrated from one site at the current warehouse off Yaxham Road, which will have a new sales area.

Mel Howe, whose late father Terry opened the first Birds store in Dereham High Street more than 40 years ago, said: 'Whilst it is sad to close the store, we are very positive about trade in the future and look forward to continued expansion.

'This is a big change for us and will allow us to concentrate on the growing parts of the business such as schoolwear, teamwear and workwear together with print and embroidery,'

Birds employs 12 people, and Mr Howe said there might have to be a small number of redundancies.

The company owns the shop, and Mr Howe said they would be looking to let it.
