Fans will get their first chance to watch Norwich City locally this summer when they take on Dereham Town.

Tonight's fixture will pit the non-league Magpies against a Canaries XI that looks set to be packed with development squad players.

After Tuesday night's trip to Lowestoft Town fell foul of the weather – denying City fans the opportunity to get their own pre-season festivities under way – interest is likely to be perhaps even higher than usual for the warm-up clash.

Norwich's senior side have only played a behind-closed-doors friendly so far at Walsall leaving supporters itching for their first glimpse of July action.

But with tomorrow's trip to Peterborough United looming over the horizon it would be a surprise if any of Alex Neil's first-team squad featured this evening.

The absence of high-profile names will allow some of the next generation to feature against the Magpies. Those looking to grab the limelight could include talented midfielder Todd Cantwell. He will feel more at home against his opponents than most though having grown up and gone to school in Dereham.

It will be both sides' second friendly of pre-season with Matt Henman's Ryman League Division One North troops having lost 4-1 at home to higher-level fellow part-timers King's Lynn Town on Saturday.

Norwich Under-21s drew 0-0 at Dulwich Hamlet on Tuesday.

The match also presents the opportunity to land some summer silverware with the winners of the 'friendly' – which will take place at the county's football development centre (FDC) in Bowthorpe at 7.30pm – taking home the Norfolk Invitation Cup.

The match is one of Dereham's rewards for winning the Norfolk Senior Cup final at the end of last season.

A statement on the Norfolk FA website said: 'The Norfolk Invitation Cup was first played for in 1960-61 season, when Norwich City beat King's Lynn 5-0 over two legs.

'The match between Dereham and Norwich is the first of what is hoped to become an annual pre-season fixture between the winners of the Norfolk Senior Cup and the Canaries.

'Admission is £5 for adults and £3 for concessions, with half of the net gate receipts being given to Dereham Town, and the other half being donated to our Charity of the Year, meaning that as well as providing both teams with a chance to lift some silverware, the match will be raising money for a worthy cause.'

The winners will be the first team to lift the trophy in 22 years. Lynn beat Norwich, five-time winners, 2-1 the last time the competition was staged. This is the first final Dereham have reached – although the format was clearly different in the past with Chelsea and Hungarian side Ferencvaros finishing as runners-up.

Coincidently, the Hungarians are next up for City's youngsters as they continue their plans for 2016/17 during a schedule which sees them also take on FC Slovacko, Dartford – Ebou Adams' former club – Derby County and Crystal Palace.

The Magpies set up the fixture by beating Norwich United 2-0 at Carrow Road. Goals from Rhys Logan and Luke Tuttle rounded off another excellent season at Step Four of the semi-professional pyramid for long-serving boss Henman and his men.
