The junction on Draytonhall Lane and the stretch of road that runs between Dereham and Scarning has been the scene of four fatal accidents in the last 12 months and MP George Freeman has regularly called for action, previously labelling it a 'death trap'.

On Friday, he met with staff from Highways England, district and county councillors, and representatives from Dereham Town Council and Scarning Parish Council.

The group discussed the works that have been taking place in recent months to improve safety at the junction, along with the stretch of the A47 leading up to it from Scarning.

They also explored what additional measures might be possible in order to further increase safety. This included options for improved lighting at the junction and further signage on that part of the A47.

To emphasise the issues to the Highways team the group travelled to the junction to see the problems first-hand.

'Improving safety for users of the A47 is vitally important and the Draytonhall Lane junction is widely known to be a particularly dangerous accident black-spot, along with the stretch of the A47 leading up to it from Scarning,' said Mr Freeman.

'That's why I brought officials from Highways England to visit the site and meet with representatives of Dereham Town Council and Scarning Parish Council, as well as local district and county councillors, to highlight the need to introduce additional safety measures at the location.

'The meeting was very productive and I look forward to continuing the conversation in the weeks and months ahead to ensure that this junction is made as safe as possible.'

At the beginning of February a seven-week project got underway to repair the road surface between Dereham and Swaffham, cut down vegetation and re-paint lines.

But Mr Freeman stressed that 'small works are not enough on this stretch of road' and full dualling of the A47 is needed to 'improve safety and ensure Norfolk has the transport network it requires in the 21st century'.

The Eastern Daily Press launched the 'Just Dual It!' campaign in March, in an effort to pressure the government to fully dual the A47.
