A pile up involving half a dozen cars on the A47 caused traffic to come to a standstill in Norwich this morning, with motorists stuck in traffic for more than an hour in queues stretching nearly 10 miles.
Both westbound lanes on the Norwich Southern Bypass were closed between the A140 Ipswich Road and A11 Thickthorn roundabout following a multiple vehicle crash on the A47 this morning (Monday, February 4) at around 7.10am.
The smash caused tailbacks and problems on several roads in and out of the city including the A146 towards Trowse, the A140 towards Norwich and inside the ring road.
The road was closed for nearly three hours as recovery and ambulance made their way to the scene of the crash which involved six cars.
There were solid queues on the A140 Ipswich Road between the Harford roundabout and Tasburgh, the A146 Loddon Road between Trowse Newton and Holverston and queues on the A47 reaching as far as Postwick - nearly 10 miles from the scene of the crash.
Pictures taken shortly after the accident show a row of damaged cars with one hanging on its side over the hard shoulder.
Motorists sat in the gridlocked traffic took to social media to express their frustration over the delays.
Jon Rogers posted on Twitter: “It’s taken me 50 mins to do a mile. Haven’t moved for 15.”
Coral Bay Caribbean Takeaway in Norwich had to remain closed after staff were unable to get to work. A post on the company’s Facebook page said: “I’ve been sat on the A47 for over 2 hours with no sign of movement, due to a terrible accident, see you tomorrow.”
Louise Whitlam posted on Facebook: “Wish I had of known this at 8am when I left to make my 25 minute commute to work. One hour later and still 20 mins away.”
An ambulance spokesman said one ambulance and a rapid response vehicle attended the scene at around 7.53am but nobody involved in the crash required hospital treatment.
The road closure caused severe disruption to bus services in and around Norwich, including the Norwich Park and Ride and Konectbus services.
The road was reopened just after 10am.
