The go-ahead was finally given today for the re-development of the former Dereham library.

The old building in Church Street shut about two and a half years ago when the service moved to a new complex in the High Street and has become increasingly derelict and vandalised.

NPS - the property arm of Norfolk County Council - has been trying for several months to get permission for 10 apartments on the site but has faced criticism over the design of the properties.

In November Breckland councillors refused permission and described the plans as “a load of rubbish.”

But today they had a change of heart and unanimously supported revised proposals.

The fresh plans improved the design of the block of apartments at the front of the site including better windows and more brickwork than timber and render.

Planning officer Nick Moys said the re-design had “been successful” and “reflected aspects of existing nearby buildings.”

Councillors asked for railings to be put in front of the building and for the walkway from Church Street to the Queen Mother's Garden to be locked at night.
