Archant

Dereham came to a standstill this morning as the town respected a two minute silence to mark Armistice Day.

Police stopped the traffic, workers left their desks and shoppers congregated around the town’s war memorial which was encircled by veterans and school children.

Standard bearers Peter Whitwell for the Royal British Legion and Roger Broscomb for the RAF Association flanked the memorial as Canon Sally Theakston gave a short address before Royal British Legion president Dennis O’Callaghan recited the Ode of Remembrance taken from Laurence Binyon’s poem For the Fallen.

Heads were bowed as bugler John Moulton from Dereham Band played the Last Post ahead of the silence before sounding the Reveille.

Children from Dereham Church Infant and Nursery School placed a hand-made wreath at the foot of the memorial which was bathed in sunshine.

Members of the RBL and RAFA were then treated to coffee and cakes at the NatWest bank.
