Poor support ends monthly auctions
Hopes of reviving Dereham's once popular monthly auction have been dashed because people in the town are not giving it enough support, the new organiser has said.
Hopes of reviving Dereham's once popular monthly auction have been dashed because people in the town are not giving it enough support, the new organiser has said.
For years the monthly event at Dereham's Memorial Hall was an institution led by legendary auctioneer John Dewing.
The sales stopped last year after Mr Dewing died, and in January this year Steve and Janice Long started them up again.
But Mr Long, owner of Necton-based Norfolk House Clearance Company, said that ever since it has been an uphill struggle.
He said: 'We have had no support.
'Nobody wants to put anything in for auction and people do not want to spend anything either.

'We thought we would try and carry on what John started but were losing money.
'We have done four auctions and lost money on all four, and I was not prepared to carry on.'
Mr Long said they had tried a number of things to generate more interest, such as increasing the amount of furniture and white goods for sale, but that nothing had worked.
The last auction was on April 28.
