Norfolk-based soldiers and airmen were hailed for their “courage, generosity of spirit and absolute devotion to duty” during their time serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Breckland Council chairman Peter Francis cemented the relationship between the authority and the Light Dragoons Army regiment at Swanton Morley and RAF Marham as he handed over special letters of thanks during a military honours ceremony on Thursday.

Mr Francis said probably the most memorable time during his year as chairman had been the amazing turnout at the welcome home parade for the Dragoons in Dereham in November, which the council organised.

He presented the framed citations to Lt Col Angus Watson, commanding officer of the Light Dragoons, and Wg Cmdr Gary Headland, officer commanding the base support wing at RAF Marham and thanked all the Norfolk-based servicemen for their efforts.

Part of the citation read: “Breckland District Council wishes to register the great sense of pride and honour, shared by all the people of Breckland, and wishes to offer you this token of recognition in respect of your recent operational tour in Afghanistan/Iraq.

“We recognise the dedication and sacrifices which you and your colleagues have made and the lethal risks which you have borne for the good of all people everywhere.

“Your courage, generosity of spirit and absolute devotion to duty have been proven in conditions of great danger, hardship, and adversity.”

Lt Col Watson said: “Once again I am very touched by the generosity of Breckland Council and the entire Breckland community and it recognises what we did in Afghanistan.”

Wg Cmdr Headland added: “It is a wonderful honour to be recognised for the courage and professionalism and we are hugely grateful.”
