A bid to get what locals call one of the most dangerous roads in Norfolk a 40mph zone has been launched by safety conscious residents.

Yaxham Parish Council has called on its neighbour Dereham Town Council to back their calls to have the road between the two settlements restricted to a 40mph limit.

They want to see Yaxham Road, which turns into Dereham Road, restricted to 40mph from Westfield Lane, where the 30mph stops on the edge of Dereham, to where the 30mph limit begins in Yaxham.

While the road has been widened, to create room for a cycle way, it is still found to be a hazard, George Crummett chairman of Yaxham parish council told Dereham Town Council.

One particular concern was the corner at Watering Farm.

“In the last year since the improvements we have seven photographs of accidents on the Dereham patch of the road and 12 in our patch.”

Phillip Duigan, of Dereham town council, said: “I can't think of a more dangerous corner in Norfolk than that at Watering Farm Corner. That whole road should be restricted to at least 40mph.”

Dereham Town Council agreed to support the bid by writing to Norfolk County Council, the highways authority for that road.
