Council officials are in talks with a landowner about a possible site for a long-awaited recycling centre for the Dereham area.
People have faced up to a 30-mile round trip to Ashill, near Watton, or Hempton, near Fakenham, for the household waste sites after the facility at Beetley shut in October 2004.
The EDP understands negotiations for a site in Dereham are “progressing well” and there could be an announcement early in the new year - but talks are at a “sensitive stage.”
A Norfolk County Council spokesman said “Norfolk County Council has made financial provision in next year's budget for a state-of-the-art recycling centre for Dereham - similar to the brand new purpose built site at King's Lynn.
“We haven't purchased any land but are in negotiations with a landowner.”
