Sports club buildings on a village playing field have been torched for the third time in a month.

Scarning playing field's football and tennis pavilion was set alight close to midnight on Sunday, just two weeks after half of it was burned down.

Fire fighters from Dereham and Watton took nearly an hour to put out the blaze at the playing field in Shipdham Lane.

On July 10 the nearby bowls club pavilion had been burned down.

It leaves the Dereham Posties football club without anywhere to change, although the tennis and bowls club still have use of a metal container to store equipment.

Playing fields secretary Gaynor Archer said the latest fire, being investigated by the police, was very disappointing.

“We don't know what is going on,” she said. “We had just put in new windows and doors and the bowls club had put new carpets in their pavilion.”

She said there had not been much left of the football pavilion, built in about 1947, and insurers had written it off, so it was not as much of a loss as the first time.

But now they were unsure of how they could replace the buildings, fearful any new structure would just be burned again.
