A weather warning has been issued for East Anglia as snow started to fall heavily in parts of Norfolk.

Norfolk Police tonight said that they had received 15 reports of road traffic accidents, most caused by treacherous conditions. A control room supervisor said the amount was 'unheard of' for the time of night.

A Norfolk County Council spokesman confirmed that gritting lorries had been sent out across the county and would be completing a 'full run'.

The Met Office has issued a low level of weather warning for Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire. Its advice is 'Be prepared'.

Snow showers, which have been heavy at times, have been falling in Norwich and some other parts of Norfolk and Suffolk, including Beccles and Lowestoft. There have been light snow showers in Dereham. So far the snow has not settled.

More snow showers are forecast overnight and tomorrow.

David Cockburn, from Bawdeswell, reported heavy snow in Dereham at about 4pm. He said it had settled on fields and hedgerows but not on main roads.

Flurries in Beccles and Lowestoft were also reported.
