A scheme to turn a disused village garden centre site into a holiday park is back on the table after being fought off by villagers last year.

THPD Properties originally wanted to create 100 holiday cabins, a campsite and other leisure facilities including a swimming pool on the 3.9ha site of the former Breckland Garden Centre on the B1135 Dereham Road in the Yaxham, near Dereham.

This was scaled back to 50 cabins with a promise of extra jobs and a boost to the economy, but it was thrown out by planners last December.

Now the company has come back with a fresh scheme - a scaled back project of 25 cabins with an area for touring caravans and camping.

It would use an existing building on the site for a home for holiday park employees and would convert the shop on the site into a reception and shop, which could be used by villagers.

A café and shop, give planning permission in 2003, would be used as an office and store. There would also be a shower and toilet block, roads around the site and landscaping, according to the plans submitted to Breckland Council.

The site is currently being used for a recently opened farm shop and the application states a fall back position for the company would be to re-open it as a garden centre.

The holiday park plans were turned down last year mainly due to a lack of perceived need. There were also concerns about access to the site, off a notoriously dangerous section of the B1135, traffic, the environment and the impact the extra people would have on the village.

The plans are to be discussed by Yaxham Parish Council's next planning meeting on September 11.
