As the seventh collection for Scream Pretty, the make-up artist takes the 230-year-old Toi et Moi ring off the finger and rebuilds it as an ear edit.

It’s built on an idea that has resisted translation for over two centuries. Toi et Moi means “you and me”. The design dates to 1796, when Napoleon proposed to Joséphine with a diamond and a sapphire set side by side. Two different stones, chosen on purpose. Jackie Kennedy wore her own version, an emerald and a diamond, and that is the pairing Martin points to as her reference. The point of a Toi et Moi is that the two stones were never meant to match.

Martin’s argument is that the idea has spent 230 years on the wrong part of the body. Her collection moves it to the ear: each piece pairs a pear-cut stone with a round one, and the three designs play off each other rather than sit together as a set.
