Bradenham Cricket Club, near Dereham, got their first win of the season away at Thetford on Saturday, May 13, in the Norfolk Cricket Alliance Division One match.

A cold afternoon welcomed the teams and Thetford invited the Bears to bat first.

Al Bates and Will Dewing set about the opening bowlers with Bates particularly severe on anything full or short. Bates made an excellent 56 – including five big sixes before being caught, but the pair put on 99 for the first wicket.

Dewing was also now well into his stride, and he was joined at the crease by Hoare, Ellis, Evans and Steward for support as he peppered the boundary moving to 82 before he was bowled out.

Kevern added 21 and the team finished on 242 for 8 off their 50 overs.

In reply, Fox soon had opener Deacon trapped lbw and Will Dewing bowled both Cooper and Newey, having already removed the dangerous Conroy lbw for 30.

Bates then chipped in with 2 quick wickets as the home team was reduced to 95 for 6. At the tail end, C Baulch added 21 but Thetford were well beaten by Bradenham, by over 110 runs as they were all out for 131, with Bradenham having 10 overs to spare. For his performance with bat & ball, Dewing was awarded man of the match.

After the game, team captain Rob Ellis said: “We’re really pleased with our performance today.

“Will and Al got us off to a brilliant start and gave us the opportunity to post a really useful total.

“We defended this well with all the bowlers chipping in and came away with an excellent result. We look forward to welcoming Sheringham to the Green next week.”
