The honours were even as Fakenham Town Football Club took on Dereham in a 1-1 draw in their Eastern Counties Premier Division match on September 5.

The points were shared on the warm, but slightly wet, evening at the Daly Group Stadium, as the Magpies travelled down the road to the home of the Ghosts.

The visitors put in a display that saw most of the possession, but not enough clear-cut chances to win the game.

Dereham Town controlled possession across the opening spell of the game, with play coming through the midfield duo of Jordan Lake and Jamie North.

14 minutes in saw Dereham’s first good chance, after some strong work from Jordan Buttle down the left-hand side. Buttle flew past his defender before laying the ball off to Gascoigne, his effort spooned wide.

The home side responded, by going straight down the other end, as Dereham’s Tom Coombe spilled a low-driven effort, but prevented the rebound with an excellent reflex save from close distance.

Dereham took hold of the match with a strong, fast-paced, spell, Jordan Buttle continuously fed the ball to run at Fakenham’s defence, trying a few shots once around the defender.

It was Buttle who finally broke the deadlock on 38 minutes. He got the better of his defender, again, striking the ball with his left foot across the goalkeeper, whose strong hand was not enough to prevent the ball from going under him.

At half-time, Dereham led. The visitors started the second half as they ended the first, chances falling to the entire front line, even beyond.

After 66 minutes, the referee dealt his first card of the game, a yellow for Fakenham's Cameron Beazer.

Fakenham got back into the game through an excellent freekick from the boot of Jack Robinson in the 74th minute.

As the game approached 90, both teams shared possession evenly, Fakenham with the best chance to win the game as Josh Youngs's header went narrowly over the bar.

The last real action of the game was Sam Watts losing his front two teeth after clashing with the Fakenham striker.

For the Magpies, it felt like a chance to have taken all three points but settled with one away from home.

Next up for Dereham is Newmarket Town at home, while Fakenham takes on Lakenheath at The Daly Group Stadium.
