A Norfolk rugby club has given its ground an official name for the first time in its history, honouring a local family with a long connection to it.

Dereham Rugby Club will now play at Eaglesham Park after the new title was unveiled at an official ceremony.

The ground, on Moorgate playing field, did not previously have a name.

The new name references the club's connection to Duncan Eaglesham and his two sons, who played have all played for its first team and served in other roles over several decades.

Duncan first played for the club in 1976, two years after it was established, and was president between 1981 and 1984.

Both his sons also played and became first team captains, David in 1978 and Graham in 1986. Graham has been the president for the last ten years.

Jonathan Pilbrow, club treasurer, said: "It just reflects a bit of the club's history. Our main identity is still about being a family-fun rugby club.

"The name change was really well received. Lots of the players thought the rationale was brilliant."

The name change is a welcome milestone after a turbulent period for the club.

After winning their league in 2023, they had to pull out the following season when 11 members left to go to other clubs or were forced out by injuries.

However, the club plans to return next season.

Mr Pilbrow hopes that having a meaningful name will strengthen the team's identity, and bring in "some longer lasting investments" since it has also extended its lease for another 50 years.

He said there will be a continued focus on recruiting new players in preparation for the new season, which begins in September.
