A young swimmer in Norfolk has taken a major step in her sporting journey after joining a competitive swimming club just a year after being unable to swim.

Seven-year-old Mia Ellerker has begun training with Dereham Otters Swimming Club after progressing rapidly through lessons at Gem’s Aquastars Swim School in Swanton Morley.

Just twelve months ago, Mia was too nervous to put her head underwater and found the pool an intimidating place, but regular lessons and encouragement helped her confidence grow week by week.

She started lessons last April and, according to her teachers, something quickly clicked as she began to enjoy the challenge of learning new skills in the water.

Angela, her swim teacher at Gem’s Aquastars, said: "Mia joined us in Stage 2 needing support with buoyancy and aquatic breathing, but she was always keen to focus on her technique.

"It’s been lovely to see how determined she is and how quickly she has progressed through the stages."

Mia was also inspired by watching her older sister Lily train with Dereham Otters, which encouraged her to keep working towards joining a squad herself.

Despite only turning seven at the end of November, Mia recently passed the Bronze Squad trial, marking an important milestone and allowing her to take her first steps into squad swimming.

Angela added that preparing swimmers for the move into club training is a key part of the swim school’s work and said it was rewarding to see Mia make the transition.

Dereham Otters head coach Sam Watts: "At Dereham Otters, we’re passionate about creating a supportive and encouraging environment where young swimmers can develop at their own pace."

Dereham Otters welcomes new members at all stages, from beginners to those interested in competitive swimming.
