Challenge of triathlon well met

PUBLISHED: 12:48 12 May 2011

TRIATHLON: Sean Watson, 16, from Swanton Morley, made his successful transition from aquathlons and biathlons to the full triathlon at the Waveney event at the weekend.

Tri Anglia held the first of the two annual events at the Bungay Swimming Pool in Suffolk. The fine weather held enough to see 163 competitors of all ages compete over the same course.

The triathlon distances were a 400m pool swim, followed by a 20k cycle and a two-mile run. The race was conducted in swim waves, taking some two hours to get all the athletes on the course.

Watson, who was racing for the Human Performance Unit, started with the second fastest swim of the day, posting 5:02min, and completed the 20k cycle in 35:58min.

His run time of 11:48min was the fastest time of the day, which saw him finish in overall 10th place and win the men’s under-20 race category.

Watson is a pupil at Dereham Northgate School, swims for Dereham Otters, and is hoping that his performance at the weekend was enough for him to be selected to compete in the British Youth Elite Triathlon Championships early next month at Blenheim Palace.

He thanked Norfolk County Council Sports Aid for all their continued help and support.
