There's a real buzz around Dereham Cricket Club this season - and not just because Buzz is the nickname of new chairman Neil Irons.

There's a real buzz around Dereham Cricket Club this season - and not just because Buzz is the nickname of new chairman Neil Irons.

A range of changes have been made at the Norwich Road club and a large number of young players are coming through the ranks to appear in all three Saturday teams and the Sunday XI.

Irons has taken over from Adie Hewitt and said: “This club has a fantastic youth base and is dripping in former glories - we need to rebuild on this.

“The club has lost far too many valuable players over the years and now needs the youth to be nurtured for first team cricket.”

Irons has relinquished his second team captain role and that has been taken on by Jack West, who is one of the products of the youth system at Dereham.

Hewitt has taken control of the ground maintenance after groundsman Alan Hall called time on his duties after many years of valued service.

Hewitt remains on the committee, with help from players, stalwart Tony Carter and Tony Finn.

Duncan Hewitt has stood down as first team and is supporting new skipper Joe Marcezski.

Behind the scenes there have been other changes with former secretary Kevin Denmark having moved on. He has been replaced by Carolyn Lake.

The youth set-up is now co-ordinated by Jo Fletcher.

Food and bar duties are dealt with by Irons' wife Tracy.

The club is well supported and has just signed a two-year sponsorship deal with new playing shirt sponsors Bawdeswell Garage (see picture on page 47).

The club - which is still searching for a tracksuit top sponsor - is holding fund-raising events every month of the cricket season including a car boot sale on Monday, May 25.

Irons said: “The club backroom team is now in place, we just need to get Dereham CC back on the map and winning trophies.”

A new website www.freewebs.com/ derehamcc is run by student Neal Widdows and Neil Irons.
